Re-invention of
the South Square Mall is one of DAD's most significant current projects.
After months of planning, the
first public phase took place from Sept. 29 - Oct. 1 in the form of a Community Design
Workshop ("Charrette") and Institute attended by almost 200 people. The reports
which resulted from that event, and the captioned photographs taken during its progress,
illustrate what was done, who was there, and the direction provided by affected citizens
and professional designers working together.
The Workshop was an
important first step in the development of a plan founded on market analysis, citizen
input and dialog, excellent design, and economic realities. The process is ongoing. It
will not be completed until implementation of the first phase of a multi-phase long range
plan actually occurs. Until that happens, DAD plans to document here events as they
unfold. Summary and progress reports, sketches, drawings and photographs, formal papers,
events listings, and - if demand is sufficient - streaming audio files of talks and papers
will be published. In addition, and essential to the success of this project,
this will be your 24-hour forum for inputting your own ideas and reactions. Don't be shy;
share your vision and insights, your criticism and your support.
What's it gonna be? We don't
know ... yet. Bookmark now, and stay tuned.
