CHARLES
S. BOHL
Mr. Bohl is a Senior Research Associate with the Center for Urban and Regional
Studies, and instructor of traditional urbanism and sustainable community design at North
Carolina State University School of Design. He is also the author of the forthcoming Urban
Land Institute publication Placemaking: Town Centers, Main Street and Transit

CHARLES TERRY SHOOK
Charles Shook is co-founder and President of Shook Design Group, Inc.
Charlotte, NC and Los Angeles, CA where he directs a design practice that
merges the traditional disciplines of architecture and urban design with the best
practices of advertising and consumer research.
He and his colleagues have developed unique design approaches founded upon techniques and
principles distilled from the fields of cultural anthropology, demography, and psychology.
An arsenal of atypical design tools and methodologies have been developed which allows the
firm to design a diverse range of environments, from restaurants to mixed-use town
centers, that tap into the psychographic values and aspirations of the populations they
serve. Through such processes Mr. Shook and the firm's professionals in merchandising,
market research, advertising, environmental graphics, and entertainment design have
delivered immersive environments that respond to consumers expectations regarding
lifestyle and convenienvce, and to time honored principles associated with enduring
places. Mr. Shook also co-teaches a course in urban retailing with Robert Gibbs for
Harvard's Summer Institute at the Graduate School of Design.
Mr. Shook and the firm have been published
widely and have ongoing projects throughout the U.S. and Australia.
